The French Know How to Open Refrigerators
69
There is something just plain graceful about the French Door Refrigerators. They are pleasing to the eye, with the solid base of the freezer on the bottom and the wide refrigerator section on the top. A completeness of the picture is present when you look at this appliance. It is not glaring, but rather subtle in its affect.
The really advantage of this type of refrigerator is the wide space in the cooling section. All to often, in a Side-by-Side, you try to put in a cake plate or a large pizza from Costco or Sam;s Club, you know the type. (They come in a box that is just too wide for most refrigerator shelves so you end up setting things on their side or at an angle or even cutting the size down, just to get something to fit!)
How Do You Use a Refrigerator?
The question is not out of line. You need to think about how many times a day is your refrigerator opened and for what reason. Is the majority of the time just to get water and ice? Most all of the refrigerators now have the option of getting those things outside - right in the door, but you know that. There are other outside doors to your refrigerator that allow milk or juice to be accessed without lowering the interior temperature.
There are bottom freezers with one or two drawers. I like the two drawer option - that way you can keep the short term frozen foods in the top drawer where it is a little easier to access. The bottom drawer you can use for those things that you plan to keep a little longer.
Really Wide Refrigerators
Of course there are really wide refrigerators or double refrigerators. I find that more than one refrigerator is very nice. That way, I keep all of my vegetables and fruits in one that is set a a slightly higher temperature than I use from dairy and meat products. The eggs float back and forth between the two, depending on which one has the most room to fill. (I buy eggs in the flat five dozen pack so they do take room.)
Take Your Choice of Colors and Styles
Gone are the days where a refrigerator was white, or you could buy it in white if you preferred!
There are other ideas at Kitchen Interior Design or Luxury Kitchens on both refrigerators and your kitchen in general. Decide what you need and what you want, generally there is a way to get both of those fulfilled if you are realistic in your vision of your kitchen.

Is that big one all refrigerator or is it halfl refrigerator, half freezer? It is awesome.
I've seen these double door fridges on visits to the USA, and thought they look very useful.
Sadly, many European kitchens are simply too small for this size of appliance.
This morning I read that here in the UK house-builders are producing new dwellings that are much smaller - with no storage space.
However, thanks for giving me something to dream about.
Three of my four children now how the bottom freezer as you pictured. They love it. I have an old side-by-side and do run into the width problem you mentioned. Good hub on a subject many wouldn't think to write about. Voted up.

I like the one that is pictured last but there would be room for nothing else in my kitchen - not even me!! :))
