A Young LaMancha Goat

As I had said, Moonlight, the goat, came with the property., as did two cats.

Now we have always been animal lovers, but the animals inside our house have been dogs for a very long time. The last time I had a cat was when I was very little. And here we are with two cats that have a history.

The cats were born in the attic of the house. When they were not very many days old, they fell down between the inside wall and the outside wall. Mama cat tried to get them out but could not so she left them. The owners hear the kittens but could not believe that they were ‘in’ the wall. So up in the attic they went to look for the kittens. They found the place where the birth had taken place and then the hole where the kittens fell through and into the wall. To their credit, the owners, who had just redecorated the room where the cats were, took a saw and cut a hole in the wall to retrieve the cats.

Three Tiny Kittens
Three Tiny Kittens

Off to the vet with these tiny kittens. Their eyes were not opened yet, so you know they were very young. Yes, the owners were going to keep them – putting them down was not an option. After all, they had just cut up a wall that had cost them a good ‘penny’ to have redone and custom painted. There were two little females and one smaller male (who did not survive the injuries from the fall). Thus, these two kittens were declared a new breed of cat – Arizona Wall Cats of unknown lineage.

Hand feeding the kittens, their personalities soon became apparent. One was independent and wanted to do things for herself (she is the one that looks like a Siamese); the other, who is beautiful as well, but definitely not Siamese in appearance, was laid back, and would eat as long as you would let her.

One of the interesting things about the Siamese, Sam, is that she has twenty two toes. Yes, you read that correctly, she has twenty-two (22) toes. On her front feet there are six toes each whereas on the back feet there are five toes on each foot. She would walk on snow just fine! The other cat, Sophie, has the normal number of toes and can barely walk at all, rolling is more like it!

These cats are as different as night and day. Sophie still will eat and eat, where Sam is a hunter. She is out most of the night hunting gophers and other ground critters that are not welcome around the garden. Yes, she eats the cat food but small amounts and spaced out over the day time.

Sophie has the classic fat cat. You cannot get her to run around and play. She wants you to pick her up and put her on your lap as she cannot jump that high any more. We have moved her food station up so that she has to jump up to a platform (very solid) to eat. I think that is making a little difference. She is now pretending to hunt birds. (Don’t be upset, there is no way she could chase down a bird; unless, of course, the bird fell over laughing at this fat cat waddling after him.)

Nevertheless, she is quite lovely although fat.

The other one will jump on our laps and sing us songs of her huntings and then curl up and take a nap while still on our laps.

They are very different from each other. You would never guess that they are sisters, unless you heard them fighting!

Well, I started this HUB with a reference about Moonlight, the goat. Suffice it to say, he does not like the cats and the cats, both of them, stay out of his way. Very strange, but we all have our likes and dislikes, don’t we? I guess the cats do too.

Hello quester.ltd. Well, of course, I am so pleased to know that you took these two orphans in. I'm saddened about the one who didn't make it; sometimes, nature and happenstance are harsh. But, you surely would have THREE kitties had he survived! "One can never have too many cats." That is great...and look how BIG they've become...and beautiful; those blue eyes are astounding! They Do have different personalities; don't they. My many kitties are as different from one another as is possible. thank you for writing this fun hub!

Yes, we would have the three - but we were lucky to have the two.

At one point we were dog-sitting for my Mom when she was showing her Shar-Pei. For two months we had something like 19 dogs plus the wolf in the household - lots of fun since we knew it was only temp. We did have 8 dogs of our own at one point.

thanks for the comment Lucky Cats

Q, the kittens/Cats are lucky to have you! I also rescued kittens in the past, and still find cats amusing when I encounter them in the city or during my travel. Beautifully written, so here is my vote. :)

What a wonderful story - although sad about the wee one that died. The photos are so cute - really beautiful animals. Many thanks for sharing.

Thanks Seeker7 (from one to another seeker), yes it was sad but he was so badly broken that his life would not have been a happy one. Sometimes, we have to let go and pray for the best.

Thank you for your time and comment.

Hi Q ... loved this, of course, being a cat person. I love dogs too but cats are bonded to my soul. I admire the way you never thought of getting rid of them .. you two have large hearts.

One thing about Sam ... she is a polydactyl cat (many toed) so you have something in common with Ernest Hemingway. Me too ... see my hub on polydactyls:

Much love ... as we cat people say : )

Angie Jardine - thanks for your kind words and you are right, it never crossed our minds to get rid of the kittens.

One note of interest, we use an automatic gravity fed feeding station for the cats; we have turned it around to face the wall to make it harder for Sophie to eat. She is showing signs of losing weight and seems to be happier. She is much more active and I saw her actually chase a bird the other day. Wonders will never crease.

Blessings to all.
