My Mama Shar-Pei Was A True Treasure

I introduced to you our Shadow in Wolves as Our Avatar and told you that when we brought our wolf home, we had several other animals at the time. Let me tell you about my Shar-Pei.

First of all, my Mother raised and showed Shar-Pei dogs with a great deal of success. She had too many National champions to count. I will tell you this, people would fly in from all over, both in and out of country to buy one of Mother’s puppies. And she charged a pretty penny for her dogs and would sell only to those people that she liked.

My husband would say to me often, “I don’t want a Shar-Pei”; ‘Okay” I would say. It wasn’t that he didn’t like the breed, if was just he thought they were too much trouble.

Well, Mother had a litter of pups that were about 7 months old. It had been a special breeding, a repeat litter, if you will. She had a litter with the same bitch and stud about two years earlier and out of 7 puppies, six were finished champions and the other was just as well put-together and lovable but did not like the show ring. Anyone can tell you that if an animal does not like the show ring, it will not win, or at least not often. Anyway, this was a repeat breeding. Mother was hoping to get the same type and character of puppies.

I had to travel to her town on business for the day. I told my husband that I was stopping at home to see the puppies. He said “Do not bring home a puppy”; “Okay”, I said. After finally finishing my business in town, I stopped at Mother’s. I walked into the kitchen and saw this great looking gang of puppies that were strewn all over the floor. I sat down on the love seat to look at this mass of wiggles and giggles. One little girl sat away from the rest. As I made myself comfortable, this pup walked over, jumped up on my lap, reached with one paw and pulled my head down to hers. (I knew I was in trouble then!) But I left Mother’s house without a pup as promised.

The following day, Mother called and the young pup was in trouble. She had gone to the front door with me and had not left there other than to get a drink of water. She was sitting there waiting for me.

Back down the road we went.

Yes, my husband, bless his heart, took me back to see the dog and see if he could possible change his mind. We walked in the house and this wonderful puppy was sitting at the door, just as Mother said, waiting for me. She was so excited but calm at the same time, as if she knew I was coming back for her. I already knew that I was her human, but we needed my hubby’s permission to bring her home.

The three of us drove home that night; hubby driving, puppy in my lap, I sleeping off and on as I am apt to do in a car when not driving. This wonderful, beautiful left-handed Shar-Pei joined our lives for many years. There are so many stories to share about our “Treasure”. Yes, that was her name and it could not have been one better suited for her.

Thank you doglover7. Dogs have been a part of my life since I was two. I received a Cocker Spaniel for my second birthday, actually my Mother wanted the bitch to start a breeding kennel, but that's another story.

Please check in from time to time or better yet, sign up to be notified on a new story.

Thanks again for stopping by to check out my Treasure.

Such a heartwarming story of how Treasure won your heart (and obviously your husband's) at such an early age. Obviously with your love of dogs, she had a good home amidst other 4 legged babies as well as the two of you. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Thanks Peggy - my youngest daughter's name was Margaret - but not Peggy, rather Meg became her nickname.

I love your hubs on traveling and your ability with a camera is awesome - most enjoyable for those of us with only thumbs when it comes to taking pictures

Thanks for your kind comments.

What a touching story of picking or being picked by the right dog for your family. I think many people have similar stories of how they think the pet they have is there in there life for an important reason. Sometimes people see pets as an answer to prayer and I agree with this thinking. Dogs are wonderful animals. Voted up, awesome, and beautiful!

No doubt that some matches are made in Heaven, and we had better listen with our hearts and heads. Dogs are here to help us through life - after all - dog spelled backwards is God.
