School Backpacks – Is This A Social Decision?
82
Mothers know that children (and not just the very young) are swayed by the opinions of their peers. When it comes to carrying their books to and from school, a school back pack can be a quandary for both the child and the parent.
What Mother has not heard, ‘so-and-so has a backpack that is soooo cool (substitute the current word of the day) – meaning that their child’s school backpack is not. So now what happens. Do you force the child to use a backpack that you know they hate, or do you get on the internet with them and look for something that will satisfy both of you?
Sometimes, that is a tough decision. Economics certainly play a role in the decision and some of the backpacks are over a hundred dollars. There are also many that are very inexpensive that still give good value and the correct supportive construction that is needed.
Carrying Too Much Weight
Cost is not the only factor. Construction of the backpack is important not only for the length of use for the actual health of your child’s back as well. Unfortunately, all too often, children are carrying way too much weight in their bags. This has been known as a serious problem for some time.
If you can get your child, big or little, to use a wheeled backpack, you can rest assured that the young growing bones will be better off than with an overloaded bag. As I said above, the number of children being taken into the ER at hospitals with painful back injuries due to heavily loaded school backpack that has grown heavier every year. This is needless and can be easily avoided with some pre-planning.
Rolling Backpacks
These rolling backpacks are stylish without sacrificing your children’s soft bones. Rolling school backpacks are convertible in design so that when the bag is heavily loaded, the handle pulls out and you have a fully functional rolling backpack. When the load is light, you pull out the shoulder straps, swing the pack onto your back and off you go with your rolling backpack now acting like a complete should harness backpack.
The styles that are available are great - from very grown up and professional to the cute small ones for the young kids. You can have a pink book bag that little girls would love to the one with all sorts of characters woven into the fabric.
The waist bands are designed to help hold the backpack in close to the body to reduce the fatigue of the weight falling away from the body and adding stress on the growing bones of young children and young adults.
What could be better than that (unless you have someone carrying your books for you!)

When the children are younger, it is easier to direct what type of school backpack they will use. You can buy the ‘he-man’ type of colors, designs and even characters on the bags. For a young girl, the choices range from a sweet pink to Barbie and Super Hero type backpacks. So pulling one with a handle is not any sort of a battle to get them to switch.
School Backpacks
There are school backpacks that are designed to support the lower back. They are looking to prevent injury from carrying too much weight in the absolutely wrong position. Plus there is the added benefit of helping a young one to know correct posture position.
Backpacks come in school colors or with professional team logos so someone can show their support their ‘team’. There are also backpacks with college names on them – again, giving your child the opportunity to passively support their favorite team.
The main thing is to remember, get your child thinking along the same line as you are. Be concern about the balance and weight while kids are thinking style, color or just plain will my friends like it. Life is complicated for both sides of this complex equation or childhood and parenthood.
School backpacks must be by nature tough. They are kicked around, stuffed full of too many books and papers, running shoes, as well as anything that can be stuffed inside. They need room for computers and phones, game boys and science projects. The book bags spend a good bit of their useful life on the floor or buses, cars, trains and closets. They are required to hold too many of just about everything so the kids will be ‘cool’ and not looked frazzled while carrying on conversations, talking to their best friend while looking to see that special person.
All in all, school backpacks are useful, stylish and rugged. Make sure that your child has one that fit their frame and requirements and their likes.

Young bones being hurt by too many weighty school books - what a shame.
rolling packs certainly seem like the way to go.
Thanks for information

did not know about the soft bone problem - will spread the word thanks
Being a teadcher for 3 decades, whenever we had an incident with illegal drugs being carted around the school, a backpack was always involved. Very often the staff considered banning backpacks and never followed through.
What a problem for our children - we need to be careful to help our kids pick the right way to carry their books. Besides, I like the wheeled idea for me as well! LOL
I think the roller backpacks are good for younger kids. I know from personal experince, that once these kids reach middle school, they don't think it's cool to use roller backpacks. Backpacks can make quite a fashion statement, according to these school kids. Thanks for sharing.
